Dman passed his first section test

Saturday was Dominic's first test for Kung Fu. The way it works is everyone starts as a White Belt with a White Gi (outfit), and you add black to it in sections. First Section adds black to one side of the belt when it hangs down.

He needed 65 pts in order to pass the test, and he scored 70 which is VERY good. He had above avg on all but one of his maneuvers, and for a 4yo that's just outstanding work. He also had to memorize something out of his Code of Ethics (Politeness this time around) and recite it in order to pass.... Nooooo prob for him.....Once they pass the test, they have their belts taken away from them to be dipped in black die. They belts are then presented to them in front of the class in a little ceremony usually a few days later so they have a good chance to dry out.

Here he is receiving his belt back from HI Eric, along with the two other kids that passed their tests, in front of the rest of his class. As a dad I'd like to add that he scored the highest and is the youngest..... Just a little proud papa moment forgive me :)

Here is our FIRST SECTION Kung Fu martial artist with this new belt after class.

AG Springfest 2010

On Saturday Dominic got to be in his very first Parade. It was at the Allied Gardens annual Springfest, and he marched with his Kung Fu studio. It was a perfect day, crystal clear and at least 80 degrees, and he had a blast.

This is the studio's tent at the fair, they had games, gave away prizes, and at 2pm the instructors met at the dunk tank and climbed in... Yah that was pretty funny stuff

This is the staging area, which was located on the lower soccer fields of the Jr. High adjacent to the park that Springfest is held at. They walked the kids down there, lined up, and were called almost right away.

They were about the 3rd group to head out, which was really nice since it meant we were done with the march early, and had the choice of either watching the rest or going on some rides while everyone was watching the parade. No lines ! We chose the latter of course :)

Here is Dman doing his sliding side kick, and walking with the rest of the White Belts who attended. The girl and boy to his right are both 6 years old, and he was holding his own out there doing all his moves.
This is called "long fist" technique, and is the last move in a series of moves called "Cannon Fist". About every 100 yards during the parade, Head Instructor Eric would yell over his PA "Oh no Ninjas are coming..." and out of the crowd, on both sides of the street, higher level students dressed like Ninja's in all black carrying weapons would attack the front row of 3rd and 4th section students, who were also wielding weapons. The melee would last for about 30sec. and during which all the other kids marching would do their "Cannon Fist" technique, and the ninjas would be dispatched. Then they would continue marching, and once the last kid was past, the ninjas would get up and disappear back into the crowd, run ahead, and repeat it all over again for another section of the parade to watch.

Here is a shot of the whole studio after the parade, Dman is on the bottom ,far left, barely in the picture. Sorry guys, but in my defense I was shooting over the real photographer, and couldn't see my display :)

Good Job monkey-man you made us proud yet again !!!

The Play Ball Kid

So yesterday I got a call from our Season Tix Rep (who is great) that Dominic was chosen to be the "play ball" kid at last nights Padre game. For those that don't know what this is, it's a child chosen to go out onto the field and essentially start the game by saying "Play Ball !!!". We had to arrive around 6pm, were taking by Pad Squad escort deep into Petco's belly, given on-field passes to watch about 45 minutes of batting practice right next to home plate (about 15' away), so he was able to see all the players milling about and working on their skills. They also gave us 4 Field level seats right above 1st base for the game. Dman did great, listened and followed instructions like a pro, and when it was time belted out those two words we all love to hear.........PLAY BALL !!! .....
The crowd erupted, and Dominic became even more excited and a bit overwhelmed. What was really funny is that I don't think he expected to hear his own voice so loud and throughout the entire ballpark.

The Friar came right up to him and they talked for a minute...which of course he thought was the best thing ever...

He was tossed a ball that was used during Batting Practice, is about as happy with his work as could be. Then we walked back though the guts of Petco, grabbed some food and headed for the seats.
Oh and did I mention the Padres went on to shutout the Brewers 9-0 on the night Dman lead them into battle ??

Oh yeah baby !!!

Below is a small video, and if you watch the scoreboard you will see him up there in his retro Padres colored visor.
